Earl Smith, 53, of Wheelerville, Pa., formerly of the Grover area, passed away at home on July 21, 2012.
Earl Frederick was born on December 5, 1958 in Troy, Pa. He was the son of the late Sidney F. and Christine (Fitzwater) Smith. Earl's first seven years were days spent learning and exploring on the family's dairy farm near Wheelerville. During the next four years, the Smith family moved with father while he worked for several farms as a Dairy Herdsman. After his father's death in 1970, the family moved back to Canton. As a teenager, Earl worked on area farms and mowed Grover Cemetery. He graduated from Canton High School with the class of 1978 and attended Tech at Williamsport Area Community College for welding. On July 29, 1978, Earl married the former Lou Ann Avery at the Grover Church of Christ.
In the 1980s Earl was able to pursue his dream of employment as a Horse Farrier. He not only loved working with horses but also making many friends along the way.
Earl loved God, his family and all of God's creation. He was an active member and Deacon of the Grover Church of Christ. Earl will be remembered as a knowledgeable man; a horseman and a hunter. Sometimes a scientist and veterinarian type, Earl was a "human dictionary" regarding the genealogy of the family's horse and dog lineages.
Surviving are his wife Lou Ann; two children Kristine (Jason) Victory of Wyalusing and Shane (Judy) Smith of Canton; four grandchildren Lauren, Dayna and Bryce Victory and Shayna Smith; three step-grandchildren, Kenny, Danielle and Gabrielle Bohner; three siblings Eva (Charles) Bower of Montoursville, Sidney Smith of Massachusetts and Sally Smith Ault and special friend Robert Leibig of Delaware; a nephew and two nieces Jason and Ariel Bower and Ashley Ault; his mother-in-law Virginia (Kenneth) MacDonald of Canton; a special brother-in-law Ronald Swimley of Gillett and many cousins.
In addition to Earl's parents, he was predeceased by his father-in-law, Floyd Avery.
Calling hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at the Grover Church of Christ. His pastor, Will Strunk, will officiate the funeral service at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Beech Flats Cemetery.
The family will provide flowers and suggest those who wish make a memorial to Grover Church of Christ, P.O. Box 83, Grover, PA 17763 in Earl's name.
