8/15/2012 9:20:00 AM
Barbara Elizabeth Thurston, 91, of the Page Manor, 502 Church St., Athens, passed on to Glory at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, on Monday, Aug. 13, 2012 with her family at her bedside. Barbara Elizabeth Shores was born Jan. 8, 1921 the daughter of Pothier and Mable Jennings Shores at Black in Sheshequin Township. Barbara graduated from Towanda High School in 1940 and was employed by Sylvania Electric during the Second World War. On May 17, 1952 she married the love of her life, Owen Thurston, at the Union Corners Methodist Church. Barbara was an accomplished seamstress and quilter. Barbara was Owen's helpmate in the founding of Athens Equipment Company. She will be remembered as a lady of great faith with a servant's heart. Barbara was widowed in 1974 with children nine and eleven years old two years after their home and business was flooded in 1972. She continued to run Athens Equipment Company for two years, witnessed another flood of their property in 1975 and in the flood in September of 2011 lost everything in their home in Athens. She continued to keep her faith in God with a grateful heart that things were not worse. Barbara was a member of the Athens Presbyterian Church since 1952 where she taught Sunday school for children in earlier years. She enjoyed making pirogies during her 90th year for the church's annual pirogies' sale and was looking forward to dipping the mashed potatoes again this fall.

Surviving are her children, Sandra Thurston of Athens and Joseph Thurston and his wife Ellen Thurston of Sayre; grandsons Matt and Cody; great grandchildren Madilynne and Aiden; brother and sister-in-law, Norman R. and Glenda Shores of Towanda; sister-in-law, Jeannine Rockwell Thurston of Sayre; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church, Athens, with the funeral service to follow at noon at the church. Officiating will be Rev. Nelson Kopatz, pastor. Interment will follow in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens. Contributions may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, 622 S. Main St. Athens, PA 18810 in Barbara's memory. Arrangements are under the direction of the Alteri-Bowen, Funeral Home 314 Desmond St., Sayre.
