James Ivan Powers, 85

James Ivan Powers, 85, of 23 Hillside Drive, Towanda, Wysox Twp., passed away Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012 at his home. Jim was born in Towanda on April 23, 1927 the son of Dallas and Helen Ennis Powers. He was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1945 and subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. On Aug. 23, 1952 he married the former Sally Graham. Jim was employed by GTE Sylvania in Towanda for 36 years until his retirement in 1986. Jim was very dedicated to his wife, family, friends and community.

He was a member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 and the post's World War II Last Man's Club, Beirne-Webster VFW Post No. 1568, Towanda, Towanda Gun Club, Bradford County Outboard Motor Club, Wysox Volunteer Fire Department and the GTE Sylvania Quarter Century Club. Jim enjoyed playing softball and baseball in earlier years and also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, gardening, playing cards, traveling and was an avid sports fan especially of baseball and football.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sally Graham Powers at home; children Donald (Karen) Powers of Apalachin, N.Y., Michael (Rose) Powers of Asylum Township, Cheryl (Mark) Vaughn of Towanda and James Gary (Ruth) Powers of Athens; grandchildren Stacey Powers, John Vaughn, Michael Powers, Kelly Seidi, Nathan Powers, Lindsay Vaughn, Julie Powers and Olivia Powers; a great granddaughter, Mackenzie; an uncle, Leo Ennis; and several special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dallas and Helen Ennis Powers, and siblings Virginia (Herbert) Fox, Laverne (Daisy) Powers and Harriett (David) Wells.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012 at the funeral home with Rev. Edward Michelini, pastor of Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Towanda, officiating. Interment will follow in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, N. Towanda, with Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors. Contributions may be directed to the Guthrie Dialysis Unit, Guthrie Square, Sayre, PA 18840 or to Wysox Volunteer Emergency Medical Service, Box 302, Wysox, PA 18854 in Jim's memory.
