Fred L. Strawser of Monroeton, Pa., passed away Saturday afternoon Sept. 1, 2012 at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Tuscon, Ariz. while visiting his daughter.
He was born on Nov. 27, 1934 as John Bartholomew, the son of the late Francis and Mable Bartholomew. At the age of 12 he was adopted by his Uncle Fred L Strawser and Aunt Rosetta Strawser.
In earlier years he drove truck and began his career in construction. He built many homes in the Sunbury area and many more in the Bradford County area. He worked for Steven Peters Company building the Kmart in Honesdale and the Wysox Plaza in Wysox Pa. He worked for 11 years for Lowes Improvement Center in Raleigh, N.C., Selinsgrove, Pa., and Elmira N.Y. When he retired he spent his time fishing and helping Patty Cakes Daycare where he was known as "Papa."
He married Patty L. Merrit Fox on May 8, 1993 at the Bridal Path Wedding Chapel in Nashville, Tenn., by the Rev James Peak.
Surviving are his wife Patty at home; his step-children Mary Fox and Bill French of Towanda Pa., Angel and Tom Joerg of Summerfield, Fla., Michael and Kelly Ferguson Fox of LeRaysville, Pa., Aimee and Jan Lamphere of Monroeton, Pa. and Timothy Fox and Amber Shaffer of Towanda, Pa.; his children Susan and Robert Vegors of Tennessee; Judy and Richard Haire of LeRaysville, Pa., Karen and Jack Arnold of Arizona and Fred Strawser Jr. of New Jersey; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by a special friend and foster brother Gary and Hope Hulsizer of Sunbury Pa.; mother-in-law Gladys Merritt and Jamie Thompson of Laceyville, Pa.; brother-in-laws and sister-in laws Walter and Diane Merritt of Wyalusing, Pa., Gary Merritt of Rome, Pa., Susan and Paul Brown of Laceyville, Pa., Betty Jo and Ambrose Bailey of Towanda, Pa., Kelly and Arthur Manning of Laceyville, Pa. and Joseph Merritt of Indiana; sister-in-laws Sarah Bartholomew of Trevorton, Pa., Dorothy Bartholomew of Florida and Marie Bartholomew of Catawissa, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Francis, Robert, David and Raymond and father-in-law Walter Merritt and brother-in-law Thomas Merritt.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa., with Pastor Bill Klees of the Community Alliance Church, Monroeton, Pa., officiating.
