Ellen McGovern, 82

Ellen McGovern, 82, a long-time resident of Canton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, Sept. 26, 2012 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Ellen was born in Towanda on March 23, 1930. She was a daughter of the late Walter and Blanche (Place) Chamberlain and graduated with Towanda High School's class of 1948. On May 16, 1953, she married Robert "Bob" McGovern.

In earlier years, Ellen worked in the office of Towanda's Meredith Motor Sales and Bradford County Memorial Park. She later worked at the Canton High School cafeteria for many years until retiring in 1991. Ellen also enjoyed being an area Census taker for several years. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Towanda.

Family always came first in Ellen's life; she was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She could be seen most days walking around town or more lately at the New Life Church. Ellen possessed an unique personality who genuinely cared about people and liked to stay informed. She enjoyed times spent visiting with people, entertaining friends at their home, knitting, crocheting and word puzzles.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Bob; two children, Robert "Rick" (Nancy) McGovern of Manlius, N.Y. and Janet Brubaker of Cordele, Ga.; four grandchildren, Ryan (Carolyn) McGovern, Meghan McGovern, Robert "Robbie" Brubaker and Deanna Brubaker; a sister, Sarah Maskarinec of Towanda; sister-in-law, Patricia McGovern of Towanda; several nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and neighbors.

She was predeceased by six siblings, Harriett Hourtz, Marjorie Milan, Patty Allen, Donald, Pete and baby Joseph Chamberlain.

Calling hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr., Canton followed by transferal prayers offered by Rev. Jasper Smith at 1 p.m. A Requiem Mass officiated by Rev. Maureen AtLee Hipple, church Rector, will be held at at 3:15 p.m. Saturday the Christ Episcopal Church, 1 Main St. in Towanda. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Towanda. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests those who wish may consider a memorial in Ellen's name to the American Diabetes Association , P.O.
