Corning Community College to Participate in Commit to Complete Day
9/30/2012 9:52:00 AM
CORNING, NY -- The 30 State University of New York (SUNY) and seven City University of New York (CUNY) community colleges have set aside Wednesday, Oct. 3, as Commit to Complete Day and have adopted the slogan: “Commit. Complete. Compete.” The thematic message is simple and straightforward: “Students who complete an associate degree have better prospects for scholarships, internships and jobs in an uncertain economy.”

All SUNY and CUNY community colleges are sharing statistics and information with students to make their case:
Students who complete an associate degree can expect to earn $400,000 more in a lifetime than a high school graduate. For those who transfer and earn a bachelor’s degree, the figure rises to $900,000. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau)
An August 2012 report by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce finds that almost half of the jobs lost in the recession have been recovered and virtually all of those jobs required some form of postsecondary education. New York residents who transfer directly from a SUNY or CUNY two-year college with an associate degree are guaranteed entry to a four-year SUNY college. (Source: SUNY Transfer Guarantee Program Guidelines, Document Number: 3303)
Corning Community College (CCC) has organized several Completion Day events. The main event, held in the Main Dining Room on the Spencer Hill campus, will kick off at 1:00 p.m. with opening remarks from CCC President Dr. Katherine P. Douglas. Dr. Douglas will introduce a state-wide, live-streaming internet presentation delivered by Keynote Speaker Isa Adney, a woman who gave up private college to spare her parents from six-figure debt. Adney will talk about her life-changing experience at community college that helped her define her future—an experience that she writes about in her book, “Community College Success: How to Finish with Friends, Scholarships, Internships, and the Career of Your Dreams.” The event is free and open to the public.

"Completion of a college degree or credential at Corning Community College is an important step for our students to accelerate success that lasts a lifetime,” said Dr. Douglas. “Statistics show students who earn a college credential will earn more, enjoy increased job security, and are more likely to experience a healthier and longer life. Everyone at CCC is committed to assisting our students understand the important difference a college degree makes and that we have the systems in place to assist every student who commits to complete, to succeed."

Other events on the Spencer Hill campus include an “Introduction to Transfer Planning” from Noon to 12:35 p.m. in M204, The Commons building; and “Controversy Between the Covers: A History of Banned and Challenged Books” from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library.

Events at other CCC locations include a Bar-B-Que/Resource Trivia event at the Academic and Workforce Development Center in Elmira. Students will need to answer a question about a resource available at the Center in order to get their lunch. The Center will also be having a Resource Scavenger Hunt that will require the students to go through the building and find out about the resources available there. There will be a drawing for a gift card for those who complete the hunt.

CCC will have pledge tables at all five college locations from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The first 1,500 CCC students to sign a pledge card and banner at one of the designated pledge tables will receive a “Commit-to-Complete” gel wristband. All students who sign a pledge card will receive a raffle ticket for one of five gifts provided by the academic divisions.

Also on the day of the event, poster boards will be provided for students, faculty, and staff to post their comments in the following category “clusters”: what motivated or motivates you to complete your degree and what obstacles did you or must you overcome for completion?
