Spencer Allen "Spence" Harding, 65

Spencer Allen "Spence" Harding, 65, of Waverly, N.Y., formerly of Wildwood, Sayre, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012 at his home.

"Spence" as he was known by his family and friends was born in Sayre on Jan. 28, 1947 the son of the late Spencer Albert Harding and Mary Sperduti Harding. He was a graduate of Athens High School class of 1964 and subsequently became employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad in Sayre. Spence was a veteran of the Viet Nam War having served in the U.S. Air Force from March 30, 1966 to Dec. 18, 1969. Following completion of his military service, Spence returned home to Sayre to work at the Lehigh Valley Railroad, which later became GE Rail Car, until his retirement in April of 2009. Spence loved operating his air boat on the river near his former home at Wildwood. He enjoyed classic cars, dogs, gardening, hunting, fishing and having coffee daily with his friends. He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his outgoing congenial personality and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his life-long companion, April Knox of Waverly; special granddaughter, Emily; sisters Mary Elizabeth "Bette" (Thomas) Holbert of Rome, Eloise Congdon and Lee Ripley of Sayre, Patricia (Joseph) Miles of Manheim and Kathleen (Michael) Juda of Manheim; a special aunt, Rose Costello of Sayre; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins; and his constant canine companion, Lady.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St., Sayre. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct.9, 2012 at the Epiphany parish, S. Elmer Ave., Sayre. Interment will follow in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, with the Valley Color Guard according full military honors. The family suggests that contributions be directed to the Stray Haven Humane Society, 194 Shepard Road, Waverly, NY 14892 in Spencer Allen Harding's memory.
