T. Arthur "Art" Johnson, 84, former Towanda Borough Fire Chief, and well-known resident of 202 Lombard St. Towanda, passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda.
"Art" as he was known by his family and friends was born June 30, 1928 in Towanda the son of the late Cornelius and Amanda Dean Johnson. He attended Towanda High School and in early years became employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Art subsequently served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 1, 1957 he married the former Margaret Sill in East Towanda. Following completion of his military service, he returned home to be employed by Valley Cities Gas and was later employed by Towanda Borough and GTE Sylvania for 25 years until his retirement in 1991. Following his retirement, Art served as a school crossing guard in Towanda for 10 years until declining health no longer permitted him to continue. Art was an active and devoted member of the Towanda Fire Department for 68 years having served 3 terms as Towanda Borough Fire Chief. In early years, he participated in hose drill competition with Franklin Steam Engine Company, Towanda which won numerous awards over the years. Art was also active with the Towanda Fire Police until his health declined. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Towanda, the church vestry and Towanda American Legion Post No. 42.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Johnson at home; children, Beverly (Bob) Sandor of Laceyville, Pamela (Charles "Bud") Emerson of Standing Stone Township, Bruce (Stacy) Johnson of French Asylum, Douglas (Tammy) Johnson of Endwell, N.Y. and Ronald (Fawn) Johnson of New Tripoli; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a special nephew, Fred Johnson Jr. of Towanda; and several nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Fred "Punk" Johnson in May of 2002.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the Towanda Fire Station, 3 Elm Street, Towanda. A Requiem mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012 at Christ Episcopal Church, 1 Main St., Towanda with Rev. Maureen Hipple, Rector as celebrant. Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord military honors at the church. Interment will be private. Contributions may be directed to the Towanda Fire Department, 3 Elm Street, Towanda, PA 18848 in T. Arthur Johnson's memory. Arrangements are under the direction of the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.
