SAYRE, PA -- The Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers awards a $500 grant. This grant was awarded from the Bradford County Discretionary Fund that gives out a grant each year. The CFTT Bradford County Advisory Board determines what area of need it wants to focus on and then solicits proposals related to that area of need. This year, the Advisory Board decided to make a grant available to a teacher in the Bradford County School District. Sunnylee Mowery, an Art Teacher at H. Austin Snyder Elementary School was awarded the $500 grant. She applied for funds towards a Chinese Shadow Mask residency she wanted to implement. The residency is designed for students in 6th grade and is led by Chinese theater artist, Hua Hua Zhang. The goal for this residency is to share Chinese culture, art, and theater with students who would otherwise not have this kind of exposure to Eastern cultures. Ms. Zhang will visit Snyder Elementary ten times during the 2012-2013 school year to work with 6th grade students to compose a shadow theater performance for the Sayre community. 6th grade students will participate as actors, set and costume designers, directors, musicians and script writers. The residency aims to inspire students and let them know everyone has the potential for creating art.
